چکیده

This paper considers an extension of the Merton optimal investment problem to the case where the risky asset is subject to transaction costs and capital gains taxes. We derive the dynamic programming equation in the sense of constrained viscosity solutions. We next introduce a family of functions (Vε)ε>0, which converges to our value function uniformly on compact subsets, and which is characterized as the unique constrained viscosity solution of an approximation of our dynamic programming equation. In particular, this result justifies the numerical results reported in the accompanying paper [5].

Merton Problem with Taxes: Characterization, Computation, and Approximation

We formulate a computationally tractable extension of the classical Merton optimal consumptioninvestment problem to include the capital gains taxes. This is the continuous-time version of the model introduced by Dammon, Spatt, and Zhang [Rev. Financ. Stud., 14 (2001), pp. 583–616]. In this model the tax basis is computed as the average cost of the stocks in the investor’s portfolio. This averag...

Continuous-time financial markets with capital gains taxes: a first order approximation

We formulate a model of continuous-time financial market consisting of a bank account with constant interest rate and one risky asset subject to capital gains taxes. We consider the problem of maximizing expected utility from future consumption in infinite horizon. This is the continuous-time version of the model introduced by Dammon, Spatt and Zhang [11]. The taxation rule is linear so that it...

Faggian Silvia and Gozzi Fausto Optimal investment models with vintage capital: Dynamic Programming approach

The Dynamic Programming approach for a family of optimal investment models with vintage capital is here developed. The problem falls into the class of infinite horizon optimal control problems of PDE’s with age structure that have been studied in various papers (see e.g. [11, 12], [30, 32]) either in cases when explicit solutions can be found or using Maximum Principle techniques. The problem i...

Corporate Taxation, Corporate Finance and Investment: Theory and Applications in Dynamic CGE Modelling

Dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) models, such as the MONASH model developed at the Centre of Policy Studies, typically use complex dynamic investment mechanisms to generate dynamic growth paths. Even so, these models don’t account for corporate finance and corporate taxation in determining investment outcomes. This paper provides final results from a work program aimed at imposing c...

Maximum Principle for Linear-convex Boundary Control Problems Applied to Optimal Investment with Vintage Capital

Abstract. The paper concerns the study of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle for an infinite dimensional and infinite horizon boundary control problem for linear partial differential equations. The optimal control model has already been studied both in finite and infinite horizon with Dynamic Programming methods in a series of papers by the same author et al. [26, 27, 28, 29, 30]. Necessary and s...
